Doctoral Consortium

Important Notice:

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Doctoral Consortium has been cancelled for ACE2017. We hope to welcome PhD students to the Doctoral Consortium at ACSW2018.

Call for Participation

The Doctoral Consortium will be held on Tuesday January 31 2016 (prior to ACE 2017).

The Doctoral Consortium (DC) will provide an opportunity for a group of PhD students to discuss and explore their research interests and career objectives with a panel of established researchers in computing education research.

The consortium has the following objectives:

  1. to provide feedback on participants' current research and guidance on future research directions;
  2. to develop a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research;
  3. to support a new generation of researchers with information and advice on research and academic career paths; and
  4. to contribute to the ACE goals through interaction with other researchers and participation in conference events.

This year the ACE Doctoral Consortium is sponsored by the Computing Research and Education Association of Australia (CORE).  The sponsorship covers full registration for the Doctoral Consortium for up to 15 attendees, and for those wishing to stay on to attend the full set of ACSW conferences the $AUD150 sponsorship can be applied as partial payment of the full student conference registration fee (AUD$300).

DC chair

Dr Nickolas Falkner from University of Adelaide.

Students who are currently enrolled in any stage of doctoral studies with a focus on computing education research.
The number of participants is limited to 15. Senior researchers in the field will provide feedback and suggestions for improvement of the students' research.

  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Either a research proposal, including motivation, background and literature to contextualise the research, research questions, methodologies used or planned, and any results obtained; OR short paper.
    • In recognition that students will be at various stages in their candidatures, the length of the research summary or paper may vary, but is limited to the full ACE2017 paper length of 10 pages.
    • Students who submit full papers to the conference may submit the same paper for the DC, or submit separate papers to the conference and the DC.
  • Questions related to the research that the applicant would like to discuss and get feedback on at the doctoral consortium.

Selected papers will be presented by authors in a 3-minute thesis format.

The research summary will be made available to other participants of the doctoral consortium to allow them to provide feedback and prepare questions on the research.
